The Teaching with Primary Sources at Northwest Missouri State University consists of a Director and Assistant Director. Throughout the year, they will lead three workshops, facilitate five webinars, and will present their work at state and national conferences. During the workshops, the directors will recruit one person to serve as a coach on the team. This coach will receive additional training and will be leading their own PD on teaching with primary sources.
Tina M. Ellsworth, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of education at Northwest Missouri State University where she teaches elementary social studies methods and curriculum courses in the undergraduate program, as well as a variety of courses in the graduate program. She earned her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in social studies education from the University of Kansas. She earned a M.A. in History from Central Missouri State University where she studied Black American History and the History of Women in the United States. And a Bachelor’s of Science in Social Studies Education. She began her career as a middle and high school social studies in a rural school district in Missouri. She left the classroom to pursue her Ph.D. at KU where she taught elementary and secondary social studies methods in the undergraduate program. In 2016, she became the Senior Economic Education Specialist for the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City before moving into a K12 Social Studies Coordinator position for one of the largest districts in Kansas a year later. Dr. Ellsworth’s research centers on pedagogical knowledge for history education, racial pedagogical content knowledge, and teaching with primary sources. She is published in Social Education, Social Studies and the Young Learner, the History Teacher, and the Journal of the Research Center for Educational Technology. She also has chapters in Teaching Social Studies: A Methods Book for Methods Teachers, Essentials of Middle and Secondary Social Studies, and The Digital Social Studies. Dr. Ellsworth currently serves on the Board of Directors for the National Council for the Social Studies and is a past-president of the Missouri Council for the Social Studies. In 2019, she was awarded the National Mel Miller Outstanding Social Studies Leader Award from the National Social Studies Supervisor Association. Dr. Ellsworth has presented at the national, state and local levels at social studies education conferences. She has led webinars for teaching with primary sources. She also is on the board for the Johnson County First Amendment Right Foundation, and is a member of the Social Justice Institute at Northwest Missouri State University. Dr. Ellsworth is a wife to Jeremy, and a mom to Emerson and Lincoln. They reside in Platte City, Missouri.
Scott M. Waring, Ph.D. is a Professor and the Program Coordinator for the Social Science Education Program at the University of Central Florida. He earned his B.S. and M.A. in Education from the University of South Florida and his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia in Social Studies Education, with a minor in Instructional Technology. He teaches courses at the undergraduate and graduate level in social science methodology, research, and theory. While at the University of Central Florida, Dr. Waring has won the Award for Excellence in Research, the Excellence in Graduate Teaching Award, the Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award, the Excellence in Academic Advising Award, the Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Academic Advising for the University of Central Florida, and the Agnes Crabtree International Relations Award. He is the current Chair for the Teacher Education and Professional Development Committee of the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS), Chair of the Florida College and University Faculty Assembly (FLCUFA – the higher education research affiliate of the Florida Council for the Social Studies), and the Program Chair for the SOURCES Conference. Dr. Waring serves as the Editor for Social Studies and the Young Learner, Editor for Teaching with Primary Sources Journal, and the Editor for Trends and Issues in Social Studies. He has served as a member of the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) House of Delegates, on the Executive Board for the College and University Faculty Assembly (CUFA – the higher education research affiliate of NCSS), as Editor for Contemporary Issues in Technology and Teacher Education – Social Studies, Interdisciplinary Feature Editor for Social Studies Research and Practice, and as the Chair for the Society for Information Technology & Teacher Education's (SITE) Social Studies Special Interest Group. He has over 200 conference and workshop presentations and has written or co-written grants totaling over $6.7 million, including a Teaching with Primary Sources grant from the Library of Congress, a Fulbright-Hays grant (Czech Republic), a Fulbright Specialist award (Bulgaria), a Fulbright Scholar award (Czech Republic), and three United States Department of Education Teaching American History grants. Dr. Waring has published ten books and over fifty journal articles and book chapters focusing on the teaching and learning of history, teaching with primary sources, and the utilization of technology in teaching.
